Undergraduate Degrees
NLSIU offers two undergraduate programmes. The five-year integrated undergraduate BA LLB (Hons) Degree Programme, pioneered by NLSIU, provides a strong foundation to pursue professional options or further academic opportunities.
In Academic Year 2025-26, the University welcomed its first cohort of the new NLS BA (Hons) Programme!
Postgraduate Degrees
NLSIU’s postgraduate programmes include the one-year Master of Laws (LLM) Programme, the two-year Master’s Programme in Public Policy (MPP), and the 3-Year LLB (Hons) Programme. The MPP is an interdisciplinary programme that provides comprehensive training in designing, translating, and evaluating the efficacy of policies.
Research Degrees
Our research degree programmes are intended for students and practitioners keen on pursuing advanced studies, research and scholarship. The University offers the following doctoral programmes: Ph.D (Law), and Ph.D (Social Sciences, Humanities and Public Policy) Programme.
Online & Hybrid Programmes
The Online and Hybrid Programmes offered by NLSIU’s Professional And Continuing Education (PACE) is intended to make legal education more accessible to interested students and practitioners who desire flexibility in location/time. We offer 10 programmes across various domains to graduates of any discipline from a recognised University.
Research
Over the last three decades, NLS has played a significant role in legal research and reform. This has included working on key legislation that has shaped India’s development. Its specialised research centres have been repeatedly called upon to shape laws and improve implementation in intellectual property, child rights, and environmental laws, among many others. Our focus areas for the path ahead include state capacity in the 21st century, issues of law and technology, the future of work and legal system reform.

“This is my third stint at NLSIU, since I had earlier studied here as an undergraduate (2003-2008) and taught in a contractual position (2011-2013). I am excited to be here again as the institution is going through an ambitious expansion of its taught programmes as well as its faculty and staff numbers. Over the past year, I have greatly enjoyed listening to several fascinating presentations by colleagues and visiting scholars at our weekly faculty seminars. The classrooms are as lively and challenging as I remember them from my student days. The students are articulate and inquisitive, often pushing the discussion far beyond what the teacher is prepared for.
While there are newer challenges thrown up by the ongoing expansion, it is important to remember what has given NLSIU the great name that it has today. Especially for its students, the place inculcates the capacity to exceed oneself, both in the academic and co-curricular spaces. While the institutional environment emphasises the pursuit of scholarly excellence, it also models the development of team-work, a sense of practical judgement and a commitment to public good. Most importantly, it gives us the ability to ask critical questions and yet be able to laugh at ourselves from time to time.”

“Born and raised in Kolkata, I studied law, history, and political thought in Delhi, Oxford, and Cambridge, UK. From this interdisciplinary vantage point, I bring to bear a historical and theoretical approach to law, and a political and conceptual method to history, in both my teaching and research. At NLS, I have taught subjects ranging from administrative law and jurisprudence to a specially curated course on global ideas of freedom. Currently in Berlin on a Humboldt fellowship, I am working on a manuscript on Rabindranath Tagore’s political and legal thought, which builds on my PhD thesis. Next year, I will be in Oxford as part of the inaugural cohort of the new Koch History Centre, researching the state-religion interface in anticolonial thought. My core interest lies in interpreting the fate of political freedom in our challenging global times. Of all political theorists, I most enjoy reading Hannah Arendt – though I am not an Arendtian myself.”

“I completed my undergraduate studies at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, and obtained my LLM from the University of Cambridge. My academic and research interests lie in administrative law, criminal law, and legal philosophy. At NLSIU, I teach the core courses on Administrative Law and Law of Evidence. I also teach an elective that explores the practical implications of contemporary debates on law and morality, particularly in the context of unjust laws.
I am deeply interested in empirical legal research methods – both quantitative and qualitative – as tools for evaluating judicial processes, and my current and ongoing research projects reflect this interest. I am glad to be part of the vibrant intellectual community at NLSIU and look forward to contributing to and growing through my academic journey here.”

“I specialise in international arbitration. At NLS, I teach core courses on tort law and alternative dispute resolution, and offer an elective on investor-state dispute settlement. I enjoy listening to a podcast called ‘The Arbitration Station’. It is available on Spotify and the hosts take listeners through a range of topics related to commercial and investment arbitration.
On the personal front, I enjoy listening to music, reading and I love sports – I’m thrilled to have found a group of colleagues with whom I can play badminton on a (fairly) regular basis!”
